Door Core Filling
There are three basic types of core fillings for exterior steel doors as follows:
Rockwool type core – This filler is primarily used for fire doors. As an additional benefit Rockwool improves the thermal and acoustic performance of the door.
Timber core – If a steel security door is required timber is quite often used as the core filling material. Solid wood is used to fill the cavity, together with the steel outer skins making the door leaf 48mm (17/8”) thick. The door weight increases with a wood filling.
Dufaylite honeycomb core product – This material comprises high strength qualities compared to weight ratio making it an ideal material for filling the core of hollow style doors and panels. It is easy to cut and use and therefore cost effective. Its honeycomb is manufactured from layers of paper or cardboard bonded in parallel and uniformly spaced lines. When the paper is expanded the honeycomb cell structure is formed.
