Engineered Wooden Doors
Solid oak interior doors are really a thing of the past. These days most manufacturers make hardwood door products that incorporate a lesser quality wood or hollow core. The core is then overlaid with either oak or other veneer. As a result expensive and rare timbers such as oak are being used more wisely. This process of making doors is known as ‘Engineered’.
Wood like all living things can be affected by changes in environmental conditions. Timbers susceptibility to movement does not stop even after the tree is cut down and machine into wooden products. Doors especially those made from solid wood can from time to time swell and contract due to changes in the environment. These changes can cause the door to warp and twist and often become ill fitting. The door then usually requires planning and adjusting to make it fit better.
For this reason and the need to preserve timber stocks the engineered hardwood doors were devised. The majority of oak veneer interior doors made today are engineered type. They consist of a lesser quality wood core and faced with higher quality wood veneers such as oak. Instead of using wood some manufacturers use a high density fibre board (HDF) as the core of the door. This material would be used in higher quality white oak interior doors for example. Engineered doors are less prone to swelling, warping and twisting and remain stable. Panelled type doors are made in a similar way producing engineered stiles, rails and panels.
The engineering process not only produced doors that are stable, good quality but are also affordable. They are also offered as internal fire doors.
